A parent asked one of our staff if she could be notified when new chapter books were added to the collection. The answer was Yes! Staff have created a number of newsletters on a variety of topics that you can subscribe to and receive via email. Besides a newsletter on Children's Chapter Books, there are approximately 30 different newsletters that feature recommendations from individual libraries or that are subject specific like the listing for craft and hobby books called Make It! Another newsletter is Book Sizzle which highlights books currently in the media. To browse the list and make your selections, just go to www.wccls.org, click on the Lending Library tab, then Good Reading: Book Reviews and Beyond. The Good Reading in Your Inbox page will allow you to browse the listing of newsletters. It is produced and managed by the Hennepin County Library with the goal of locating "hard-to-find and miscellaneous information". Some of the information is specific to Hennepin County but most entries are not.

Geocaching is fun!

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices or mobile recievers (smartphones). The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online.

A typical cache is a waterproof container, ranging in size from nano, about the size of a shelled peanut, to large, which can be as big as a 5 gallon bucket. Most caches contain at minimum a log for finders to sign, and larger caches might contain items for trading.

We have several books in our system to help you get started geocaching. In fact, the Beaverton Main Library and the Hillsboro Shute Park Library both have actual geocaches on site!

Visit, www.wccls.org and then go to ONLINE RESOURCES, then Science and Technology and AccessScience is at the top of the list!

I think one of the best features is the ability to download images and illustrations for use in PowerPoint presentations! These images may be found in the Study Center or in the Multimedia Image Gallery. A time saving feature for those pesky last minute science reports.

The database also has study guides, animation and videos to help grasp concepts.

Yes, the OverDrive process for sending a Kindle book to a Kindle device or a Kindle app is the same. Whether you are sending the Kindle book to a Kindle reader or a Kindle app on a different gadget, it all happens on a desktop computer, using the Library2Go website and the Amazon website. At the end of the process, you choose which Kindle app or reader you want to send the book to, then sync the app with your Amazon account. The instructions here (http://www.wccls.org/library2gohelp/kindle) work the same, no matter if you're using a Kindle reader or a Kindle app on another device.

You can even try it yourself by downloading the Kindle app for PC (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=kcp_pc_mkt_lnd?docId=1000426311) onto your computer if you don't have a mobile device to test with. That's what I did when the Kindle lending for Library2Go first launched.

Scholarly Articles

Patrons doing scholarly research here at the Beaverton City Library will often run into the problem that the library doesn't subscribe to the print version of the periodical that they need. The next step to take is to search the A to Z Serials Access database which will tell the patron if the journal is available full-text online. If that fails, the Internet is your next step. Typing in the title of the article in quotations will sometimes lead you to the full-text version, but often it will guide you to one of the subscription services like JSTOR or just be referenced in the bibliography of an article. But don't give up yet! Authors submitting articles to scholarly journals are often associated with educational institutions and frequently have their own websites. Searching the author's name with keywords from the article title will yield surprising results. I'm not promising that it will work every time, but it is more than worth the effort to give this method a try. If successful, I am guaranteeing that you will have a very happy patron.

Oregon Job Hunters-Trying to prepare for the NCRC?

If you have seen Worksource Oregon's website or visited any of their facilities lately, you might have noticed that there is a new readiness test. It is called the NCRC, the National Career Readiness Certificate, and it measures key workplace skills. So, how do you prepare for it?
There are a couple of options for prepping for the NCRC assessments. Through the WorkSource Oregon Centers, an individual can take what is called the Initial Skills Review. This gives an indication of how the individuals will do on the assessments for the NCRC. After completing the ISR, individuals can access the WIN Courseware. This is online, self-paced courseware that help prepare the individual for the NCRC assessments. The courseware can be accessed from outside of the WorkSource Centers after an individuals has logged in once. Staff at the WorkSource Center can also provide PDF versions of the courseware if requested.

Individuals can also access online practice tests through ACT, the company who created the NCRC. These cost $5.00 each. Here is link to that resource: http://www.act.org/workkeys/practice .

When the program was in the pilot phase of implementation, there were some workbooks purchased in 2008-2009 by one of the pilot sites, but at this point, there are no free booklets at the WorkSource Oregon locations, or libraries. But the Beaverton City Library has always been a good place to find general materials on brushing up on your math, reading comprehension, writing, and research skills.

Moving to another area of the country can be a daunting task and finding out as much information on your new home base can be overwhelming. A website that can help in determining which neighborhoods are best suited to your needs and dreams is NeighborhoodScout.com. The website uses the latest neighborhood statistics available from several leading government sources including the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the U.S. Department of Justice, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the U.S. Geological Service, among others. The neighborhood profiles include school quality, housing costs, crime rates, income levels, the age, size and style of homes, the density of buildings, rental areas versus owner occupied, the proportion of families with children, the ages of persons in the neighborhood, ethnic and racial makeup, educational levels, languages spoken, types of careers of those living in the neighborhood and much more. Although you can subscribe to the database for more detailed information, the statistics that are available free of charge are substantial.

Felons and Ex-Offenders - Job Hunting Resources

More than 5,000 sentenced prisoners are released from state or federal jurisdiction in Oregon correctional facilities each year, in figures from 2008-to present according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin. People who have done time and now have legal histories have an uphill battle if they search for work. Often they fall through the cracks and end up in the same kinds of troubles as before. For resources read on:

A man was searching for felony friendly job listings at the library and I had no good leads and decided to give him a referral to Worksource Oregon which did publish a list of felony friendly employers, but it was not online.

Are you intrigued by questions like: What if the Nazis had won World War II? What if John F. Kennedy had not been assassinated in 1963? What if Dracula actually existed and married the widowed Queen Victoria? These and many other questions have been asked- and answered- in a wide variety of alternate history books, stories, and even some non-fiction works.

If you're interested in alternate history, parallel worlds, and "what if?", you should check out the website Uchronia.net. It's chock-full of lists of alternate history series, anthologies, and references, and it's searchable too. There's even a list by date of divergence (when the alternate event took place), so you can look at works based in a particular time period: dinosaurs, Columbus, Kennedy, the Civil War, etc. For the alternate history fan, this website is a must.

I was browsing through the July/August 2011 issue of The Advisory: a publication of the Washington County Disability, Aging & Veteran Services Division and found that a training session for family members and other unpaid caregivers providing care in the home will be offered on Wednesdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26 & November 2 from 1:00 - 4:00 p. m. at No Worries Training Center, Parkside Business Center, 8285 SW Nimbus Ave., Suite 150 (at the corner of Nimbus & Hall in Beaverton.) The sessions include: basic personal care techniques and assistive equipment, medication administration, dealing with challenging behaviors, elder law considerations, end-of-life planning and self-care and community resources. Finding Out about Doctors

Finding the Dirt about Doctors

Oregon medical board, www.oregon.gov/OMB, has put on their website every official act that they have levied against a doctor, the ones that have reached to a conclusion, but not the unwarranted accusations. At least the last 20 years is full text on line but for older orders, you may have to call the office to request the results and pay $10-$20 for each order. The website does have the status of their certification, but appears to not list their office address or phone any longer. It also lists Medical School and Residency graduation and dates.
A doctor’s standing will be listed on the OMB such as: Provisional ..or.. Good standing. Measures against a doctor can be a range-- from severe accidents to dull ones like a failure to send a chart in a timely manner, due administrative errors etc. And some things don’t even make it onto the OMB site. Some things that have nothing to do with malpractice yet if they have a judgment against them, for example a judgement from court that they have a substance abuse problem then that will be fully online. There is a link to recent (within the last 4 years) malpractice rulings (final judgments). If there are older cases, you would have to request a list from the Board and pay a fee (around $10-20).

State Medical Examiners--other states not Oregonhttp://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/education-careers/becoming-physician/medical-licensure/state-medical-boards.shtml is the link to the AMA list of state boards of Medical Examiners. Or, if long websites are hard to remember then Google -State boards of Medical Examiners. You will find this site, plus individual state sites. It appears that most states now have a fairly robust list of licensees. Two previous states where a known doctor held licenses back in the 70’s still lists his name, but not as an active physician. (Remember that physicians can be listed under M for Medical doctor or P for Physician and Surgeon.) Different states will include different specialties, such as acupuncturist, physician assistants, etc, and most states have a separate nursing board.

ABMS website http://www.certificationmatters.org/ is the website for ABMS searching as of Feb 2011 with a nice interface, in which search must be initiated, and then you are prompted to log in. It's free to register. Even without a subscription to the print volumes, ABMS.org will tell you which board-certification that person is certified with.
However some information lags ex: if they just got it in the last 6 months, if they moved, it might not be correct. Other examples: One known specialist isn’t even listed in ABMS yet he is board certified in addiction medicine. It is legal for a doctor to merely say that he specializes in xxx (anything within the realm of medicine and/or surgery). The question to ask is really, is he board-certified in that specialty.

The AMA-ASSN site. http://www.ama-assn.org/ Vast but sketchy - It has a “find a doctor” button. It lists physicians who are not always members of the AMA too. But it’s self-reported. So if someone responds that they are a surgeon then.. okay maybe they merely say they are but it’s not 100% a convincer that they are certified as a surgeon. What if a doctor’s profile is not in there? Maybe he’s not a member. Perhaps it’s not showing much for nonmembers.

Paying dot com sites (i.e., healthgrades.com)
Sites that make you pay $10 for this info has been incorrect there too. A known doctor did a search in it and reported back that it was not correct (the address was 8 years old). For fee sites do not generally provide more than the info on free sites.

What people really want
The depth of information that is available at the National Practitioner Data site is what people really want, but it is not often available to the general public. It’s only available to state boards of medical examiners who are trying to judge whether they are able to be licensed in a new state, administrators of hospitals who have paid a big fee, government agencies like the DEA, etc.

The Call and Confirm methodYou should be able to contact a doctor and ask them what state their license is in, what their specialty certification is and when, what their interest is (what are the last 2 conferences that the doctor attended). Then you can go to that board or the ABMS and confirm it. If you can’t confirm it it’s either really new or maybe something is actually fishy.

About this time of year, your efforts to begin a garden are paying off. Greens and sprouts are taking off. Beneficial insects and worms are crittering about, and you are learning from our great collection of books on gardening here at the library.

But have you ever wanted to take it further and learn so that you can use those skills or teach others? Exploring a Master Gardener certificate, taught by the Oregon State University Extension service, is a popular endeavor for many people who fall in love with gardening here. That means that the winter classes fill quickly. If you want to lean more, be prepared to sign up for this in September.

Oregon Career Information System

For students or anyone who is interested in exploring careers, the Oregon Career Information System is one of the most helpful resources I have ever used. Although the database focuses on Oregon schools and programs of study, the user can expand their search to includes schools throughout the United States. It's a highly interactive site and what I have found is that the more you use it, the more you find with each new search. One of the most valuable aspects of the database is that it covers not only the two and four year schools, but also those institutions that offer short-term study programs or certificates for various occupations. Included in the detailed information:

Overviews of individual occupations with details on specific work activities, common work activities, working conditions, physical demands, skills and abilities, knowledge, interests, preparation, helpful high school courses, hiring practices, wages, employment and outlook, advancement, and further resources. It then allows you to search schools that offer programs of study in that occupation.

The program section addresses program admission, graduate admissions, typical course work, things to know, and other resources. The schools offering those programs are listed by geographical region in Oregon (or you can choose an out-of-state location) and then give detailed information about the school, student body, costs, financial aid, admissions, academics, student life, housing, student services, and career services. Website links are also given.

If you aren't sure about a particular job title but are interested in a specific field of work like health care or business, the clusters index lists appropriate occupations within a variety of fields.

The financial aid section is extremely useful in that it allows you to narrow your search to certain types of financial help like scholarships, grants and loans. The scholarship list is very detailed and there is a section specifically for Oregon residents.

The exploration tools section is helpful in that it lets the user sort through various areas such as occupation, undergraduate or graduate schools, financial aid and one of the most interesting tools, the Reality Check which gives a very realistic picture of how much money you will need to live and which occupation will may for those needs.

ReliefWeb was launched in October 1996 and is administered by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This site contains reliable and timely information regarding humanitarian emergencies throughout the world. It is highly interactive in that it allows the user to see in-depth profiles, updates and reports on individual countries and disasters. For example, the latest information regarding relief efforts in Japan were listed and as I was creating this blog, several updates to the site were made. Jobs and training opportunities are also listed, letting the user focus on a particular country, type of job, organizational source, etc. This is an incredible resource for anyone interested in humanitarian efforts throughout the world.

Gateway to Science Information

As the website states, "Science.gov is a gateway to government science information and research results. Currently in its fifth generation, Science.gov provides a search of over 45 scientific databases and 200 million pages of science information with just one query, and is a gateway to over 2100 scientific websites." We all have had the experience of trying to do an Internet search and coming up with less that stellar results, usually because someone wants to sell us something! This website is an interagency initiative of 18 U.S. government science organization within 14 Federal Agencies. It is an easy-to-use site which allows you to browse topics like agriculture & food, biology & nature, physics & chemistry and a number of other science related subjects. This site would be of interest to students, the layperson, or those within a science profession. All would benefit from this interesting resource.

The Prices 4 Antiques database has been around since 1999 and is a great source for researching antiques, collectibles and fine art. The information in the database includes data from over 140 U.S. auction houses, with more than 50 national and regional auction houses covered on a regular basis. There are approximately 1,300 categories in the database and each record has at least one full-color photograph. Some of the categories included are advertising, architectural, autographs, books, bottles, clocks & watches, crafts & folklore, dolls, ephemera, firearms, furniture, games, glass, jewelry, kitchen & household, music, nautical, paintings, pottery & porcelain, textiles, toys, and tools. Each category is then further divided, giving the user a wide range of choices for their search. Did you know that Radon is a naturally occuring radioactive gas that comes from the decay of urnanium founnd in most soil types. You cannot see, smell, or taste radon but it can be deadly to your health. According to the EPA it is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. It is easy to test for radon and everyone should probably do it. The EPA has a good website that explains all the facts about radon including how to test for it and mitigate it if necessary. A Treasure Trove of Oregon and Pacific Northwest history-The Oregon Historical Quarterly

Answers to all of the above queries can be researched in The Oregon Historical Quarterly,(OHQ), a peer-reviewed, public history journal that has been published continuously since 1900 by The Oregon Historical Society. This quarterly carries well-researched and well-written history about Oregon and the Pacific Northwest for both scholars and the general public. The OHQ is one of the largest state historical society journals in the United States.

The Beaverton City Library owns the OHQ back to 1900 when it was first published. Bound Reference volumes of the quarterly can be found adjacent to the periodical area on the 2nd floor of the library. The library also provides access to indexes that can be used to find information in the quarterly. Some of these indexes along with full text content of the OHQ can also be found at the Oregon Historical Society's webpage, www.ohs.org/research/quarterly/index.cfm.

Here's a great resource for finding good recommendations of currently published books from those on the literary frontlines--independent bookstore owners and employees. The American Booksellers Association--the nonprofit trade association for independent bookstores--publishes a monthly online list of book recommendations from independent bookstore employees called the "Indie Next List." Sure, you've used Internet Movie DataBase for all kinds of movie info- release dates, running times, finding actors & actresses. But did you know you can do even more by using the Advanced Search options? To get to them, just click on the Search button at the top of the screen, without entering anything in the search box. One I've found especially handy is Collaborations and Overlaps. For example, you remember you saw a movie that both Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey were in, but it was long before The Men Who Stare at Goats. Put the two names into the Two People Working Together search (don't forget to select the correct name from the drop down menu), and you get a list of titles, including tv shows, that they both participated in, and there you see it: K-PAX, from 2001. You can also use the Common Cast/Crew search to find out which people worked on any two movies together. For example, a search for Thirteen and Twilight reveals that 10 people worked on both movies, including the director, 2 actresses, and several sound staff.

Referred to as the Annenberg Political FactCheck, this site "monitors the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases". Politicians' claims and statements are analyzed and individuals can browse by date or search by keyword to access the last four years of the archives. They are a clearinghouse for all sorts of consumer sites like consumer reports, cnet, and others. They have useful links to other reviews as well as links to websites selling the products.

For each product the website selects the top products based on expert and user reviews. They offer a full report on who the experts are and why they say what they say, as well as a review of important product trends and developments. They also rank the top reviews and include pertinent links to the websites and organizations who did the reviews.

The Government Research Services division of the Oregon State Library has digitized a historic run of Oregon Voters' Pamphlets as part of its mission to make government information available to the citizens of Oregon. Digital and paper copies of the Voters' Pamphlets are also a permanent part of the Oregon State Library's Oregon Documents Collection.
In 1904, Oregon became one of the first states to print and distribute a voters’ pamphlet. The Beaverton City Council recently passed an ordinance allowing residents to have chickens in their backyards. The Library has a growing collection of titles on raising chickens in an urban setting. Although there are many job searching websites available, one of the easiest I have found to use is Indeed. This site searches thousands of company websites, job boards, newspapers and associations and makes searching these sources an absolute breeze. All you do is list the job title, keyword or company name and a location (if you want), and the site will list the jobs available with direct links to the original job posting giving you all the information you need in order to apply for the position. If you don't have a specific job title in mind, you can browse their listings of job categories or search listing by specific geographic locations. Also included in the site are salary charts and job trends. Check it out!

The weekly newspaper, Portland Business Journal, (portland.bizjournals.com/portland/ ) is the main resource that discusses the local business news. The Beaverton Library subscribes to it, and reading it each week will help those who are job hunting, prospecting, or just interested in what's going on.

The online version is only a medium level of information, subscribers get full content of the articles. We do have a logon at the Beaverton library, because we are full subscribers. Ask at the Main Reference desk if you would like to be logged on as a subscriber, for free.

It has a careers section which highlights executive level jobs, and you can search bizjournals for keywords to locate articles of interest, for example, to prepare for an interview.

Here's how to search the archives of the Portland Business Journal

1) Go to portland.bizjournals.com

2) Click on News in the tabbed part, at top of webpage

3) Go to right and click (to the right of keyword search box) click search archive and enter keywords that you're interested in, like an officer's name, or a brand or company, or product, BUT include the word Portland!

This works 99% of the time. I tried portland software, and got mostly Portland results, with one Seattle Puget sound result. But for some reason it won't automatically let you search only one newsletter, that's why you have to enter Portland.

Insurance and Medicare Purchasing Decisions

This can be helpful when you see newer editions and older editions all blended in from library to library. The libraries that hold on to their old copies may have limited resources but many libraries purchase new copies. Just a quick tip but on to the main show: Insurance

There are many ways to shop for insurance.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners puts out several consumer guides to shopping for insurance, including Auto, Home, Life, Cancer, Long-Term, Deferred and Fixed Annuities, and Medigap.

The Beaverton City library furnishes ratings guide to Health Insurers , ratings guides to Property and Casualty Insurers, and ratings guide to Life and Annuity Insurers to you in the library's reference collection. They are located on the Index tables.

Medicare is another big decision time. Here is a book we get called All About Medicare that may clarify the structure of medicare benefits. The Social Security Handbook is another regularly purchased item that is based on the presentation of public domain data on the Social Security website.

Nolo Press's popular Social Security, Medicare and Government Pensions is another guide for consumers. Ask at the library for these and other resources on Insurance. To reserve a current copy, here's a tip: To distinguish between copies that one library may have that are from 2004 which are too old, review the tip up at top, which is to click on the red book for a specific hold on a specific copy.

Museums, Galleries and Artists, oh my!

Getting ready to take a trip and are interested in viewing art in your city/state of choice? Does the Beaverton City Library have a resource for you!

The art magazine Art in America annually publishes a special issue called Art in America: Guide to galleries, museums and artists. The Beaverton City Library not only subscribes to the magazine Art In America but we also house this special issue in our Adult Reference collection. This way you can stop in any time to gather together all the information you may need to prepare for an exciting art filled excursion, even if you aren't venturing out of the Northwest.

This special issue contains some of the following special offerings:

A Museum Preview 2009-2010. This preview is organized chronologically according to opening months. It highlights key shows, either current or upcoming, at major art institutions across the country, as well as selected exhibitions abroad.

Guide. The guide is a comprehensive alphabetical listing, arranged by state and city, of U.S. galleries, private dealers, print dealers, corporate consultants, museums, nonprofit exhibition spaces, and university galleries. Also included are addresses, phone numbers, hours, names of directors, and a short description of the type of art shown and artists represented or exhibited.

Time machine at the Library

Yes that's right folks. Step right up to the time machine, also known as ... the MS6000 microfilm machine! It's the interface between old and new. We have a microfilm collection here at the Beaverton library that you can peruse, just like how the people on History Detective do. It's housed in steel drawers which are shiny and new. Spinning a reel of microfilm is like zooming into the past. If you scan the microfilm image on the MS6000, it provides you with a perfect computer file of the image.

You can take it with you-- yes that's right--a digital copy of an archive-- past meets present. Microfilm is the exact same copy of the newspaper as it appeared--no digital changes --no hacker alterations. Safe and sound in it's hermetic microformat! You can pull up that image of the time that the Knicks beat the Lakers, or the Moon Landing, or the front page of the paper on the day you were born...

Then save the image to your device and poof! You can post it to your facebook -- a picture tells a thousand words. You could paintshop your own face onto the image and pretend you were there, ok, maybe not.. just ways to have fun for free at the library...

Yes you may be asking "Didn't Beaverton have it once before? And then it went back to only paper?"

Yes, the answer is that we used to have it online and then we stopped. But now we have it again!
You still have to come in to use it, but the quality of the print outs are better than the photocopies, and, it's helpful if more than one person wants to use it now we can accommodate more than one user.

Oregon Association of Nurseries

The Oregon Association of Nurseries publishes an annual Directory and Buyers Guide. For anyone looking for that special plant or needing nursery-related services and supplies, this directory is your key. With over 34,000 separate listings of plants, products and services, this book indicates whether the company deals as a wholesaler and/or retailer. The plant offerings are grouped into categories with alphabetical listings by botanical name. Codes are then given as to the form that you need such as liner, bare root, seedling, B&B, container or cutting. The growers are listed under the specific plant and detailed contact information can be found in the Membership listings in the front of the directory. The services and supplies section lists consulting, erosion control, landscape services, containers, fertilizer and any other item that would be of interest in the nursery trade. A copy of this directory is located in our Reference Collection under the call number 631.52 ORE. It is also available on the OAN website.

This is one of those things that seems like it would be easy to find, but it is not, so here it is, for your convenience.

Beaverton Population estimates are special statistics from the Portland State University Population Research Center (PSU PRC). They estimate population of Oregon Counties and Incorporated Cities between Census years --the in-between years, because Census is only tabulated once every 10 years. This year, the US Census will be doing 2010 Census, which if tabulated thoroughly, will really help communities.

IRS Announces
2010 Standard Mileage Rates

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
50 cents per mile for business miles driven
16.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
The new rates for business, medical and moving purposes are slightly lower than last year's. The mileage rates for 2010 reflect generally lower transportation costs compared to a year ago.

Tax Forms

It's hard to believe that tax season is just around the corner. One big change that you will notice this year is the fact that Beaverton City Library will no longer be distributing Oregon tax forms. This is not a decision that we made, but rather a decision made by the Oregon Department of Revenue. In a letter sent to Oregon public libraries, the Director of the Oregon Department of Revenue cited the need to reduce their printing budget and the fact that taxpayers are relying more on online filing. Therefore, they will no longer be distributing tax forms to public libraries for distribution. The forms can be accessed online through the DOR website at http://www.oregon.gov/DOR/forms.shtml. We will continue to distribute Federal forms as long as they make them available to us.

Oregon Geology

For all who love Oregon and Geology, this map tool link is worthy of checking out.

The purpose of the Oregon Geologic Data Compilation <--click here to go to the site (OGDC) project is to assemble the best available geologic map information for the entire state by integrating the work of many individual geologic mappers into a vector digital dataset. The data are stored in a geographic information system (GIS) format with links to a relational database. The compilation is thus a "living map" that can change as new geologic information and mapping becomes available.

What is it?

The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) has completed (May 2009) a six-year project to digitally compile geologic data for the entire state. This effort brings together the best available geologic mapping from state and federal agency sources, student thesis work, and consultants.

To view the map, your browser must must be JavaScript enabled, and, if you are using Internet Explorer, allow ActiveX controls. The map itself is image intensive. Users with slower internet connections may find that resizing the browser window to a smaller size will help the map image load faster.

You can view Oregon stratigraphy, rock type, and rock property theme maps on topographic and shaded relief backdrops along with faults, formation boundaries, and USGS 7.5' topographic quadrangle outlines and names. You can drag a portion of the map, and it recreates the map in a closer view. You can see fault lines, and there are pop up keys to determine geologic information.

Automotive Repair Reference Center Database

Hello!

I wanted to let you know about a library database that is chock full of information to help you work on or learn more about your car or truck. This database is the Automotive Repair Reference Center and can be found in the library catalog at http://www.wccls.org/, under the heading "Online Resources" then "Automotive". If you are using this database outside the library then you will need to have your library card number to access it.

This database contains a great deal of information regarding automotive repair--everything from general tips about troubleshooting and car care to extensive diagrams of engine systems and operations. It contains not only automotive repair information but also the same type of info for light trucks and vans.

Once you are in the database you can click on a year (1954-present) and then choose the specific make and model you need. You need to be as specific as possible about the type of vehicle you're looking up--engine type, fuel type, and any submodel information. Once you choose the specifics for your car or truck, then you will see some choices for the type of information you need: Repair Procedures, Service Bulletins and Recalls, Wiring Diagrams, Labor, Specifications, and Maintenance Intervals. There is loads of information in each of these areas so be sure to look closely for what you need.

Heritage Quest Online

We are very excited about the addition of a new genealogical database to our collection. Heritage Quest Online is available in the library and can also be accessed remotely (using your library card and password). Included in the database are the following resources:

~ The complete set of the U.S. Federal Census images from 1790-1930.

~ Over 25,000 family and local histories which can be searched by names of people and places.

~ PERsi (PERiodical Source Index) compiled by the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. You can find people and places in this index of over 2.1 million genealogy and local history articles.

~ Selected records from the Revolutionary War Era Pension & Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files.

~ The Freedman's Bank (1865-1874), which was founded to serve African Americans.

~ Memorials, Petitions, and Private Relief Actions of the U.S. Congress in the Lexis-Nexis U.S. Serial Set.
